A child in a hospital once told me that chemotherapy felt like having an earthquake inside them. This comment surprised me so I asked, "what do you mean"? The quick reply was, "it is like the ground is shaking inside you".
I then asked sincerely, "what does one do when the ground feels like it is shaking inside you?" And this very young child thought for a minute and then held their hand above their head and said, "Hold The Sky".
We wrote the first line of this song right there on the spot and sang it over and over again. Afterwards I embraced the heavy emotions I was experiencing in my heart. I have to admit it felt like the ground was shaking inside of me, so I finished the rest of the song.
“When the ground is shaking under me, hold the sky, hold the sky
When kingdoms crumble into dust, say goodbye, say goodbye
Sometimes life can bring you down to your knees
If you go through hell fine, just don’t stop for tea
When the ground is shaking under me, hold the sky, hold the sky
When the time is time to forgive, time to love, time to love
And if love leaves loving arms, watch the ground, watch the ground
Sometimes life can bring you down to your knees
If you go through hell fine, just don’t invite me
When the ground is shaking under me, hold the sky, hold the sky”
